01 The US is a country on wheels.
It is basically impossible to go anywhere without a car!我們的主播Erin提到,她小時候住在New Jersey時,需要開車至少10分鐘(at least 10 minutes)才能到最近的商店(the nearest store),感覺不是特別方便。
在中國,最近的便利店(convenience store)一般就在樓下或者小區里,可以直接go downstairs for a snack(下樓買零食)。
·convenience /k?n?vi?ni?ns/ n.
02 There is not a lot of security cameras in the US.
即使是在stop lights(信號燈)上,也很少有camera’s capturing(監控抓拍)。What if someone runs a red light? It is all up to you if you are unlucky enough to be seen by a police officer
·capture /?k?pt??r/ v.
·run a red light 闖紅燈
03 There is not really traffic police in the US.
Erin說在路上開車時,有時能看到a police vehicle pulls somebody over(警察讓別人靠邊停車)。
·pull over(駕車者)靠路邊停車
有時,警察will be in a parked car on the side of a road(將呆在停在路邊的車上),watching to make sure nobody is speeding(觀察并確保沒有人超速行駛)。 They must get hungry at sometime and have a snack!
·speed /spi?d/ v.
所以說,美國所謂的“交警”,實際上they are not specifically trained for traffic(他們沒有接受交通方便相關培訓),他們都是regular police officers,只不過那天恰好beon traffic duty(在道路交通領域值崗)。
04 You will see wild animals run out in the middle of the road when driving in the US.
在美國的道路上開車時,可能會看到a deer run out in the middle of the road(路中央有一頭鹿竄出來)。如果人們能及時地(in time)看到鹿出現,通常會stop and wait for deer to cross(停下來并等鹿過完再行駛)。But sometimes there isn’t enough time (當時間不充足時), and an accident will occur (就會出現事故).這有時會非常危險,所以會設置road signs(路牌)來提示there is deer in the area(附近有鹿出現),使司機提高警惕(be on high alert)。
·alert /??l??rt/ adj.
Erin有一次就見到a mother duck crossing the road with her baby ducks(一只鴨媽媽帶著小鴨子過馬路)。美國真的是有很多野生動物,不只在道路上,Erin often sees bunnies (兔子) and squirrels (松鼠) in her backyard, and in parks。
05 Drivers will have to stop way behind a school bus if they see a school bus stopping.
在美國,it is illegal to go past the school bus on any side (從停著的校車兩側駛過是違法的),直到等校車發動后,其他車才可以繼續行駛。
這是出于安全考慮(for safety reasons),剛剛提到“America is a country on wheels”,在美國there are a lot of children getting on or off the school bus(很多小孩乘坐校車),讓司機停下來等待校車是為了確保(ensure)學生過馬路(cross the road)或上下車的安全。
國外學生上學的交通方式與國內不太一樣,他們要么ride the school bus(乘坐校車),要么get driven by their parents(由私家車接送)。再大一些的學生,就可以get their licenses(考取駕照)并且drive themselves(自己開車)了。
Erin記得有一次在路上遇到一個司機did not stop behind a school bus(沒有在校車后停車),并且直接drove around it(繞過校車行駛),當時Erin車上的司機got really mad(非常生氣),開始沖那個司機叫喊(yelling at him)并且鳴笛(honking the horn)。
·honk /hɑ??k/ v.
